My journey to better putting

After being a mid to high 70s golfers for a decade now, I finally realized yesterday just how poor my putting is. By poor, I mean fucking awful. Putting has always held my game back as long as I can remember. I am an incredible ball striker and hit the ball long and hit a lot of greens in regulation. However, I’ve still only carded a handful of rounds under par and I know my putting is the reason. My journey to better putting is my guide and story of finally fixing my atrocious putting and hopefully helping our readers do the same.

Step 1: Recognize the Problem

This seems simple and easy but its the first step for a lot of processes for a reason, in order to make massive change you need to recognize your problem. Mine, and most likely yours, is that we are awful fucking putters. It makes the game way harder than it needs to be and puts a ton of pressure on every other part of your game.

Step 2: Set your intentions

We talk about this a lot, and for good reason. Setting your goal or intention is claiming your stake. This is where I am going. For me, right now I average 34 putts a round. Fucking awful, I know. I want to save 6 shots a round in my putting (avg. 28). This is a seriously huge goal and for some people unrealistic. Why set a realistic goal? The reason you set a goal is to achieve massive growth in the pursuit of it. Saving my self 6 shots a round is going to take some serious action and effort and I’m going to have to learn some new things. Which will allow me to help all of you do the same!

Step 3: Develop a good practice routine at home

Fixing my putting is going to take a serious time investment and some putting training aids. I will have to purchase a new putting green to use at home, along with some training aids to help my stroke. The one I have been “eyeing” is the Edge Rail by EyeLine Golf. I actually have one of these on the way to my house now so I will let you know how I like it. It’s one of the only tools that will help with creating a consistent putting stroke with a perfect arc, every time.

Step 4: Make more birdies

The end goal of all of this is to make more birdies. At the end of the day My journey to better putting is really about lowering scores in any way possible and for me right now, the easiest room for improvement is putting. I have had some pretty good years putting wise so I know I can make it back there and become an even better putter than I was in the past.

The Core

I’m sure most of you know this already but you Core is without a doubt the most important area to target when it comes to golf fitness programs. Anyway with good swing efficiency and club head speed will tell you that it comes from your core. What workouts target this area? Squats, squat jumps, and anything rotational from the hips up. Also anything that targets abs as well. The best way to do this in regards to golf fitness would be to include movements that relate to the golf swing. Think of a squat with rotation on the way up.


Many golfers don’t realize this but your legs play a huge role in your golf swing. Every long hitter in the world realizes this while guys that struggle to hit the ball 225 yards or more usually don’t. Your golf swing using leverage from the ground is far more powerful than just using your arms and hands. What I always tell people is to pause and the top of their backswing. Starting the down swing does not include throwing your arms and hands at the ball as fast as you can. You have to start the downswing with the weight transfer and the rotation from your legs. You are literally pulling the arms back into motion from your hips, not from your upper body.


Last but certainly not least, rotation. Rotation is obviously a major part of the golf swing and can either help or hurt you. If your body is not able to rotate properly you will miss out on yards, longevity, and of course, strokes. Having the ability to rotate properly allows all the pieces of the golf swing to fall into place perfectly and at the right time. That is how pros can swing so softly and smoothly yet strike a golf ball that goes 300 yards. They’re swing efficiency is nearly perfect because their body has the ability to rotate around a stable core.

First of all, I like putting tips. There’s nothing better in life than hearing an easy tweak from a friend and getting massive results! So what are the 3 best putting tips no one has ever told you? They’re going to surprise you. They have nothing to do with your grip, nothing to do with your stance, and nothing to do with your stroke. Like most of my tips, I like to teach from a place of mindset first. Mindset is the most important part of your golf game that no one is working on, and it helps you in your life too! These three tips are sure to accelerate your golf game and your life.

Visualize it

The second of The 3 putting tips is easy and the greatest athletes in sports history all use it. When it comes to putting, it’s simple, visualize the perfect line where the putt goes in every time. We all have the ability to do this but most of us don’t see the value in it so they don’t take the time. I will tell you that every professional athletes practice this in some form. We all know that the greats do it! So why the fuck are you not doing this? It takes 10 minutes in a day to apply to your life and 30 seconds before a putt. It all comes back to whether you believe it will work or not. Trust me, in 1 week you will understand the importance of this.

What do you think every pro does while they are reading a putt. They are visualizing how this putt is going to drop in the hole. Starting with the end in mind shows you the path. This is why most of them start at the hole and work their way back to their ball.

Take some deep breaths and focus on calming your self down and learn to let it go. This is the most important of “feeling it.” You have to build the habit of being able to calm yourself down no matter what. This is a learned behavior, if getting all worked up is a habit of yours, wouldn’t you agree that you learned that habit? If you learned that habit couldn’t you unlearn that and teach yourself a new behavior? The answer is yes, of course you can. Now is the time to make it a focus.

Lose attachment

This is the most important step, we must detach from the outcome. When we are fearful of a certain outcome (missing a 3 footer) it influences our stroke and clouds our vision. The only reason we would be fearful of this outcome is we attach to much importance to the outcome. It’s important to remember that at the end of the day, this game that we all know and love, is just a game. There is no reason to attach any thing to our results. A make or miss does not define us and you will find when you lose attachment to outcomes, success becomes much easier, and failures don’t hurt as bad. The same goes for life, what goals are you chasing? Do you think you will feel better when you arrive? Of course we think that, that’s half of the reason we set high goals for ourselves. But the truth is, when we finally get there we realize that we don’t feel any different. Maybe for a moment, but once that excitement wears away now what?

Losing attachment doesn’t mean not caring about the outcome, it means not tying our self worth to the outcome. It’s an understanding that you can live with joy, gratitude, and happiness regardless of the outcome. Do you see that mental shift? It doesn’t matter whether I make or miss, either way I am enjoying this round of golf. If you can practice this I guarantee you make more putts and have more fun golfing. Everyone is out there chasing all of these crazy tips from different golfers, none of which are tailored to you. Could it really be simple mental tweaks that take your game and life to the next level? Yes, the question becomes, will you stay focused on them long enough to get those results you are seeking.
